It is common in the synchronic literature on Modern Spanish to distinguish so-called Hanging Topic Left Dislocations from Clitic Left Dislocations on the basis of syntactic properties such as the category of the left-dislocate, island sensitivity, the distribution of these structures etc. This paper scrutinizes the posited syntactic properties of these Left Dislocations for Old Spanish in comparison to Modern Spanish. It is demonstrated that Left Dislocations in Old Spanish differ considerably from the Modern Spanish ones, for example in their sensitivity to syntactic islands. The distinction between Hanging Topic Left Dislocations and Clitic Left Dislocations becomes thus difficult to uphold for Old Spanish given the current criteria.

Abstract This diatopic study examines the characteristics of the locative adverb constructions that select possessive pronouns as complements in Peninsular Spanish oral corpora. Firstly, the range of locative adverbs that take part in this construction are scrutinised, as well as their frequency of use with respect to that of their counterparts, in which a prepositional phrase appears as a complement to the locative adverb. Secondly, the geographic spread within Spain and the diatopic differences between the various autonomous communities are discussed. Thirdly, this paper also explores the variation in use between the possessive affixes ‑

The paper explores parallelisms between Bantu (specifically Otjiherero) and Romance (through Latin and Spanish) with respect to left and right peripheries, and subject and object clitics. The analysis is formulated in Dynamic Syntax (DS, Cann et al. 2005) and centrally involves notions of structural underspecification. Through providing detailed analyses of different word order possibilities in the Bantu and Romance languages discussed, we show how DS concepts of structural growth over initially underspecified tree relations, such as the building of linked structures and unfixed nodes, provide a uniform basis for analyses of word order variation across the two language groups. We then extend our analysis to include Bantu subject/object markers, which we analyze by employing the same formal tools as used in the analysis of Romance (object) clitics, namely unfixed nodes which have to be construed within a tightly locally restricted domain. Empirical support for our analysis comes from restrictions on the presence of object markers in passive and locative inversion constructions in Otjiherero, which we show to follow from independent constraints of the availability of unfixed nodes within a given domain. The analyses of Bantu and Romance presented show that despite differences in surface morphology between the two language groups, both exhibit a striking parallel with respect to the way lexical information and general structure building principles of DS interact. The difference between Romance clitic systems and the agglutinative morphology of Bantu subject and object makers is thus seen to be comparatively superficial, while the DS analysis brings out the strong structural parallelism between the two language groups.

This paper addresses clitic placement in Old Spanish (12th century-mid 15th century) in finite main clause environments with the goal of using Dynamic Syntax (DS; Kempson & al. 2001, Cann & al. 2005) to explore a diachronic account of the differences found between the clitic distribution in Old Spanish (OSp) and Modern Spanish (MSp).The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we provide a synchronic account for both Old and Modern Spanish clitics. In addition, we model the diachronic changes that took place, which can be represented as progressive lexical simplifications.

Although the distribution of pronominal clitics in Old Catalan has been described in general terms (Fischer 2002; Batllori et al. 2005), there are no quantitative studies detailing the frequency of preverbal or postverbal clitics nor their diachronic evolution. The clitics appearing with verbs in the future and conditional tense (FC) are worth a separate mention, since these forms originate from periphrastic structures that involve an infinitive and the auxiliary verb habere, and which could appear as an analytic (dir-li he) or a synthetic form (li diré or diré-li). This paper describes the general clitic positioning and the one encountered with FC in order to verify the claim that they display parallel distributions, using a text from the 13th century, to wit Llibre dels Fets. This article analyses the pragmatic-syntactic environments in which the clitic are found, as well as the degree of grammaticalization and univerbation of the FC. Following previous work (e.g., Bouzouita & Sentí 2022), it is argued that the FC in Catalan appear to exhibit a more advanced degree of grammaticalization than the western languages of the Iberian Peninsula.

In this paper, we explore the semantic-pragmatic functions of the interjection hola in the Dutch, French and Spanish versions of the Colloquia, et dictionariolum, printed in Antwerp, as a possible case of language contact. The Colloquia, et dictionariolum, first printed in the 16th century, are parallel language textbooks designed for acquiring basic skills in up to eight languages. The first edition of the Colloquia was bilingual Dutch-French; Spanish was among the first languages added to the textbook. At the core of the textbook are dialogues related to everyday situations, such as shopping at the market or participating in a family dinner. Although these dialogues are commonly regarded as early sources of spoken forms of European languages, they are in fact instances of conversational mimesis i.e. they are representations of spoken language, intended for didactic purposes and, most importantly, adapted and translated over time by various authors. In our case study, we analyse first (h)ola’s semantic-pragmatic function(s) from a contrastive perspective. Subsequently, we explore a possible case of semantic-pragmatic extension in Spanish due to language contact. Generally speaking, (h)ola can fulfil a requestive function in Dutch, French and Spanish (cf. typology by Poggi 2009), viz. it was used to attract someone’s attention, a function that can be attested for the three languages in the Colloquia. Moreover, the dialogues of the Colloquia provide an example for (h)ola in a requestive-cessative function, used to tell someone to stop or slow down. This function has been described for both Dutch and French hola (also in English and German) but has, up until now, not been attested for the Spanish counterpart. A first explorative analysis of hola in the 16th-century Spanish CORDE-corpus does not yield any cessative occurrences either. Consequently, the cessative function of Spanish hola in the Colloquia might be due to the possible interference from Dutch or French (or both). However, in order to provide a more conclusive answer, a detailed study of the semantic-pragmatic functions of hola in the Germanic and Romance languages involved will be necessary.

The topic of this paper is the formal modelling of syntactic variation given an incremental processing (parsing/production) perspective. As a case study it investigates the syntactic variation observed in weak pronoun placement in Medieval Spanish. Weak pronouns are shown to precede and/or follow the finite verb depending on their syntactic environment. Interpolation cases, in which constituents intervene between the weak pronoun and the following verb, are also discussed and accounted for. It is argued that syntactic variation can be explained in virtue of the availability of different processing strategies i.e., different ways of building up semantic content, for one and the same natural language string. Furthermore, this paper tries to account for the diachronic changes observed in Renaissance Spanish, in which routinisation is claimed to play an important role. Additionally, processing factors are shown to contribute not only to syntactic intra-speaker variation but also to diachronic change.

Given the scarcity of linguistic resources available for spoken varieties, this paper explores the use of gamified approaches for verifying Part of Speech (PoS) tagging of spoken dialectal Spanish. The article presents the first results of the accuracy study carried out with the developed gamified methodologies and investigates whether player participation and inter-annotator agreement measures can improve the dataset. The study indicates that educational level, field of study, and geographic upbringing significantly influence human annotators’ performance in PoS tagging. Specifically, the results suggest that, as expected, Ph.D. holders have the highest mean accuracy, while, surprisingly, Master’s degree holders have the lowest. Annotators with a background in Arts and Humanities show the highest mean accuracy, while those with a background in Natural Sciences display the lowest. Moreover, players who grew up in Spain have the highest mean accuracy, followed by those from Germany and Latin America. Finally, the verified region in the PoS tagging tasks also has a significant impact on annotator performance, with some regions exhibiting a higher mean accuracy than others, though the unbalanced distribution of players per region could have introduced biases in this result, with regions with a higher number of verifications providing a more accurate representation of annotator performance.

2024Revue Romane Langue et littérature International Journal of Romance Languages and Literatures · 2 Zitationen · DOI
Abstract This paper aims to partially verify the hypothesis following which the grammaticalisation of the Ibero-Romance future and conditional tenses unfolded earlier in the (north-)eastern peninsular varieties before spreading to the central and western part of the Iberian territory through language and dialect contact. For this purpose, we will contrastively examine the distribution of futures and conditionals in Navarro-Aragonese and Castilian for the 13th and 14th century, more specifically the variation between the so-called synthetic verb forms with postverbal object pronouns and the analytic forms with mesoclitic pronouns, including the morpho-syntactic factors that favour the use of the former. It is shown that Navarro-Aragonese seems to exhibit a higher frequency of use of the synthetic forms with postverbal pronouns, especially with syncopated verbs, conditionals and a following non-finite verb form.
