Abstract Post-war Kosovo is characterised by strong transition processes, including in the car and service vehicle sector, and Germany, German culture, and the German language play a central role in these processes. The popularity of used vehicles imported from German-speaking countries has led to a change in the appearance of Kosovo’s streetscapes. These cars often carry signage or texts written in German and are very common in Kosovo. The spread of these cars is due both to the lower cost and to the high prestige of the German language and culture in Kosovo. Often the owners also keep the German number plates, as the registration of cars in Kosovo is not handled very strictly, or they retain the sticker that designates the country of origin of the vehicle, ‘D’ for Germany, ‘A’ for Austria and ‘CH’ for Switzerland. As a result, there is a strong German influence to be found across Kosovo’s streetscapes. Our article is dedicated to these particular semiotic landscapes on the basis of empirically collected photographic material. Data was collected outside the transmigrant season, i.e. outside the months around the turn of the year and the summer vacations, and the period of the lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic to avoid as far as possible non-residential German signs.

Abstract This article examines the linguistic and cultural influence of German bread culture in Kosovo, where bread holds significant meaning as a symbol of hospitality and community. The introduction of German bread products, driven by migration and economic changes, has transformed Kosovar “bread habits”. The Buka and Premium bakeries have played a crucial role in promoting German bread names and products, capitalising on their perceived prestige and association with healthy eating trends. The article researches German–Albanian relations and shows that there is intensive interaction especially in the area of food. This connection, along with the legacy of its former status as part of Yugoslavia, migration, and the presence of German-speaking institutions in Kosovo, highlights the role of bread as a culinary, language, and cultural link. Using the methodological lens of language and cultural transfer, the study demonstrates the significant influence of German bread culture on Kosovo’s bread-making practices and food culture.

s Das Deutsche als ‚lingua tecnica‘ spielt seit langem eine wichtige Rolle zur Erneuerung des Fachwortschatzes im Bereich der (elektrischen) Technik für die Sprachen Ex-Jugoslawiens. Im Zentrum steht das Albanische im ex-jugoslawischen Raum und das Mazedonische. Doch dieser Prozess dauert bis heute noch an. Mittels soziolinguistischer Methoden, etwa über die Untersuchung des Berufswandels und der Technik, kann man die Transferwege und -zeiten viel besser erforschen, als über den traditionellen Lautwandel, weil die Transferwege zu heterogen und manchmal sogar parallel laufen. Während vor den 1990-er Jahren die jugoslawische Zugehörigkeit als Kommunikationsraum dieses Transfers zu betrachten ist, dient nach dem Zerfall Jugoslawiens die Migration als Mittler dieses Sprachtransfers. Materialebeschaffungsweg etwa über Online-Portale, fördern diesen Sprachtransfer. German as a lingua tecnica has long played an important part in the renewal of technical vocabulary in the field of (electrical) engineering for the languages of the former Yugoslavia. Albanian in the former Yugoslavia and Macedonian are at the center of this process. However, this process is still in progress today. By using sociolinguistic methods, e.g. the study of changes in professions and technology, it is much easier to study the paths and periods of transfer than by focusing on traditional sound change, because the transfer paths are to heterogeneous and have occasionally occurred concurrently. Before the 1990s the Yugoslav connection may be viewed as the communication space of this transfer, but after the disintegration of Yugoslavia, migration serves as the mediator of this language transfer. This language transfer is encouraged by means of material procurement, such as online sales platforms. The aim of this volume is to reinvent Albanian Studies and to transform Albanology, traditionally performed as a subdiscipline of historical linguistics, into interdisciplinary Albanian Studies. The thirteen contributions from early career investigators from Albania, Kosovo and Western Europe cover the field of literature, linguistics and cultural studies. They address the interface of language contact, sociolinguistics, digital humanities, comparative literature and of gender, minority, migration and memory studies. By using discourse analysis, popular culture, visual arts and other recent approaches, the volume shows the dynamics of Albanian culture in both Albanian-speaking countries today which makes it a fascinating case study in the context of Balkan area studies.

This paper takes both a diachronic and a synchronic perspective on the empirical approach while exploring the emerging field of Albanology. While still applying methods elaborated during the 1960s, Albanian dialectology is considered widely researched. Other linguistic areas have focused on idiomatic written language, mainly that of print media (e.g., belletristic literature). Precisely because of this, in my view, spoken forms of Albanian have received only little attention. Empiricism in linguistics is as old as the field itself, but with that tradition comes an almost stubborn limitation to only a couple of methods applied. This needs to change, as empiricism is now present in all areas of science and has been revolutionized by digitalization.
