• The Structure of Mythological Old Comedy

  Abstract Scholars often assume that Old Comedies based on mythological stories differed from other Old Comedies primarily by their mythological plot material, and that therefore they shared the structural features of the surviving plays of Aristophanes. I show that the evidence may instead indicate that these Old Comedies did not as a rule have a parabasis or an agon. The structure of mythological Old Comedy could then have resembled the satyr play more closely than Aristophanic Old Comedy, meaning genre did not necessarily determine form.

  Abstract The meaning of the term mimesis when applied to artistic works in Aristotle’s Poetics is thought to be extrapolated from its dictionary definition of ‘imitation’. I argue that a key word in the single passage directly linking mimesis to imitation has been consistently misunderstood. A correct reading could indicate mimesis has a different definition in this particular text only indirectly related to its colloquial use. I conclude that mimesis in the Poetics may be a narrower technical term that refers to a particular kind of organization or arrangement of individual imitations within an artistic work.

• Coming to Terms with Aristotle: Technical Terminology in the Poetics and Beyond

  Aristotle uses a number of common Greek words in the Poetics as technical terms with specific meanings unique to literary criticism.I argue that the key term mimsis, though typically considered a philosophical term, may be a technical term referring to a particular kind of organization or arrangement of individual imitations within an artistic work.This technical definition is only indirectly related to the word's colloquial meaning of 'imitation', and would exclude it from being understood as a philosophical or aesthetic concept.I conclude that this wider consideration of technical terms and reconsideration of philosophical terms in the Poetics could help explain some terminological confusion in Aristotle's other texts.

• The Plot Within: μέγεθος and μῆκος in Aristotle’s Poetics

  There are two related problems in the Poetics : Aristotle’s contradictory statements about size, and Aristotle’s confusing use of two terms for size, μέγεθος and μῆκος. I argue that both problems can be solved if we understand that Aristotle only uses μέγεθος to refer to the size of the plot in relation to the size of the larger whole, and μῆκος to refer to absolute size (number of lines, run-time, fictional time, or number of plot parts), unrelated to any larger whole.
