Gesa Stedman's ambitious new study is a comprehensive account of cross-channel cultural exchanges between seventeenth-century France and England, and includes discussion of a wide range of sources and topics. Literary texts, garden design, fashion, music, dance, food, the book market, and the theatre as well as key historical figures feature in the book. Importantly, Stedman concentrates on the connection between actual, material transfer and its symbolic representation in both visual and textual sources, investigating material exchange processes in order to shed light on the connection between actual and symbolic exchange. Individual chapters discuss exchanges instigated by mediators such as Henrietta Maria and Charles II, and textual and visual representations of cultural exchange with France in poetry, restoration comedies, fashion discourse, and in literary devices and characters. Well-written and accessible, Cultural Exchange in Seventeenth-Century France and England provides needed insight into the field of cultural exchange, and will be of interest to both literary scholars and cultural historians.

A distinctive and original analysis of how the politics of the UK and the lives of British citizens have evolved in the first decades of the twenty-first century, this book provides an interdisciplinary critical examination of the roots, ideology and consequences of austerity politics, the Brexit vote and the rise of populist politics in Britain. Bringing together case studies and perspectives from an array of international researchers across the social sciences, it dissects the ways that the UK has become increasingly contested with profound differences of geography, generation, gender, 'race' and class, and considers agency as a key concept to understand the links between austerity and Brexit

Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image size Notes 1 I would like to thank the following people for their help with this introduction and the volume as a whole: Michael Basseler, Anna Beck, Gordon Collier, Sandra Müller and Stefanie Rück. Thanks also to the general editors Martin A. Kayman, Angela Locatelli and Ansgar Nünning for their help and advice. 2 An otherwise interesting volume of essays edited by Andreas Höfele and Werner von Koppenfels entitled Renaissance Go-Betweens: Mediators and Mediation in Early Modern Culture (2005), for example, manages to ignore the complete Franco-German debate on cultural exchange. A recent article by Marc Crépon in L'horizon anthropologique des transferts culturels (Revue Germanique Internationale 21; Paris: Presses Universitaires de France, 2004): 71 – 82 on translation and cultural exchange, by contrast, not only leaves out Peter Burke's work on the same topic but also does not deign to mention the fact that other cultural exchange specialists have thought about its relation to translation – for example, Herbert Schneider, Geneviève Roche and Hans-Jürgen Lüsebrink in Reichardt and Lüsebrink 1997 Lüsebrink, Hans-Jürgen and Reichardt, Rolf. 1997. "Kulturtransfer im Epochenumbruch: Fragestellungen, methodische Konzepte, Forschungsperspektiven. Einführung". In Kulturtransfer im Epochenumbruch Frankreich – Deutschland 1770 bis 1815, Edited by: Lüsebrink, Hans-Jürgen and Reichardt, Rolf. 9–26. Leipzig: Leipziger Universitätsverlag. Deutsch-Französische Kulturbibliothek. Vol. 9.1 [Google Scholar]. 3 Peter Burke's socio-historical article on translators and cultural exchange is an example which would have profited from the expertise of translation specialists (see Burke in Höfele and von Koppenfels 2005 Burke, Peter. 2005. "The Renaissance Translator as Go-Between". In Renaissance Go-Betweens: Cultural Exchange in Early Modern Europe, Edited by: Höfele, Andreas and von Koppenfels, Werner. 17–31. Berlin: de Gruyter. [Crossref] , [Google Scholar]). A particularly annoying example is that of gender issues, which most cultural-exchange specialists ignore entirely. For an attempt at integrating the two, see Gesa Stedman, '"Powders, Trimmings, and curl'd Wigs": Gender and Cultural Exchange,'Journal for the Study of British Cultures 1 (2006, in press), and Gesa Stedman and Margarete Zimmermann, eds, Höfe – Salons – Akademien. Kulturtransfer und Gender im Europa der Frühen Neuzeit (Hildesheim: Georg Olms, in press). 4 L'Auberge espagnole, France 2002, dir. Cédric Klapisch, follow-up Les poupées russes, France 2005, dir. Cédric Klapisch. 5 'not only the actual and pure transfers such as the exchange of capital, labourers, goods, concepts and ideas, but also the images of and debates about the other society. Such comparisons by contemporaries do not only allow an insight into the way people thought at the time, including all the stereotypes prevalent in the period, but may also give interesting hints as to the reasons for different developments or the rapprochement of societies.' (My translation, G.S.) 6 'Cultural exchange research … is confronted with an intense "methodological nationalism" which still penetrates the humanities. Cultural-exchange studies have prepared a number of analytical categories which open up new fields of empirical research and describe the construction of a space and a site of exchange as much as the transformation of the constellations in which reception occurs – both as concrete, specific historical processes.' (My translation, G.S.)

Gesa Stedman analyses a number of recently published contemporary British-Asian and Black-British novels that contain stereotypes and use clichés. She places them within wider trends in the British literary field which favours postcolonial novels that sideline racism and do not challenge their predominantly middle-class readers with the need to analyse their own position and values.

A collaborative ebook on the effects of the Brexit vote on the UK's cultural sector and its agents: "It's not just the economy, stupid! Brexit and the Cultural Sector", edited by Gesa Stedman and Sandra van Lente. Our contributors come from a broad range of cultural and artistic practice and many of them worry about two aspects which have come to the fore in the context of Brexit: the stark social rift which separates the Leave and Remain camps, and the nasty rise of xenophobia and insularity in all its different shapes and forms. Although our authors do not intend to be read or viewed as all-encompassing, and although they differ in respect to the focus they chose for their essays, poems, or statements, one aspect unifies their utterances: passion. Passion for the multi-faceted characteristics of culture, language, exchange, dialogue, border-crossings, passion for an outward-looking approach to both Britain, its different nations, and its neighbours close and far. A passionate fear of what Britain might lose in the process of departing from the EU. And the fear of loss does not concentrate on the loss of revenue or even on the probable obstacles to travel and artistic exchange once Brexit is in place. But the loss of ambivalence and ambiguity, the loss of conflicting opinions, texts, stances, diversity, in short: everything that culture, which is free to find its own forms of expression, is valued for.

Kupfer/Moes 2004).

This introduction offers a survey of some important critical approaches to the ways in which the First World War and its aftermath have been studied, conceptualized, represented and commemorated. In particular, it notes recent scholarly interest in issues of gender, as well as a focus on widening the geographical range of the conflict beyond a dominant European paradigm. A recurrent theme is the emergence of new types of modernity in the post-war era, and the ways in which literature and the arts do not merely reflect that modernity, but actively shape and constitute it.

The way we conceptualise the economy and ourselves as homo economicus has profound consequences for our lives. The contributions to this anthology take debates about the financial crisis, about recent austerity measures or about the Brexit referendum a step further. A common denominator of these dynamics are underlying ideas of »the economy«. Each author identifies a facet of Britain's imagined economies. They connect seemingly separate fields such as finance and fiction in order to better understand current political changes. In addition, the book offers an urgently needed interdisciplinary view on the performative power of economic thought - and in this respect moves far beyond merely British perspectives.

This title was first published in 2002: Gesa Stedman mines the vein of emotion in Victorian writing to unearth new insights into the ways literature responded to the dramatic social and political changes then taking place. Contemporary research from various disciplines, including sociology, ethnology and history, inform this study, which juxtaposes canonical material such as Dickens' "Hard Times", Charlotte Bronte's "Shirley" and Germaine de Stael's "Corinne" with popular novels and non-fictional texts, such as "The Education of the Heart" by Sarah Ellis and Darwin's "On the Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals". The analysis deals with emotions applying to both genders, but includes a special section examining the representation of emotion in relation to women. The book aims to provide new insight into the literature of the period, and brings to light new material for scholars interested in the philosophy and psychology of emotions.

This article undertakes a culture-exchange-studies analysis of an exchange of letters between Alix and James Strachey, written between 1924 and 1925 during Alix Strachey’s stay in Berlin. The city emerges as both a private and a public space, and the letters provide a unique view of Berlin from a female perspective which in many respects differs from what other members of the Bloomsbury Group had to say about Berlin.

Food in general is a useful marker of cultural exchange because changes in diet as well as changes in the representation of diet tell us something about the way one culture reacts to the impact of another not only in material terms but also in terms of self-definition and self-fashioning. This article therefore analyses material sources such as cookery books, diaries and memoirs, but also looks at the literary and visual representation of food. It does so in the context of Anglo-French relations during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries – a period when the culinary battles still familiar today first took hold in England, and to a lesser extent, in France.

Three British women writers and their memoirs or letters serve as the key witnesses to rapid change from war-torn Berlin to a highly desired tourist destination. The war-induced transition of Berlin was matched by the social changes for women whose traces can be found in the three texts: the writer’s position changes from that of the voyeuse to the flâneuse. While the old aristocratic cosmopolitanism in Evelyn Blücher’s and Helen D’Abernon’s circles was on the wane, a more middle-class cosmopolitanism, as exemplified by the Bloomsbury psychoanalyst and translator Alix Strachey, became more important in the aftermath of World War I. The three writers share an interest in social observation, but all three are tied by their particular upper-middle- or upper-class habitus. An image of Berlin emerges which predates Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin myth by at least a decade.
