HU-FIS-Profil ↗This project envisions a method in which targeted exposure to customized sensory stimuli of music and video can be utilized as a means to modify entrenched socio-cultural beliefs. The aim is to develop an innovative method of approach which increases empathy via exposure to customized sensory stimuli of music and video as a means to modify entrenched socio-cultural beliefs via emotional contagion.The intended result is the reduction of emotional prejudice, and intensification of levels of empathy towards vulnerable groups who may be the targets of discrimination. The project has two objectives: first, to examine how music-induced emotions can alter negatively entrenched socio-cultural parameters of xenophobia and racism; second, to promote a subtle, non-invasive and cost-efficient method of increasing empathy towards marginalized communities by the host population. With the world divided into countries which host refugees, and countries which, due to a multitude of reasons, create refugees, it is imperative that a way is found to build mutual understanding through compassion and empathy toward people in need. Advancements on cognitive/emotional/behavioral-focused studies in how to effectively measure empathy, compassion, well-being, and socio-cultural identifiers of human behaviour provide a more focused and targeted approach on how to mobilize interventions which have been proven to have an effect on the human psyche. This method has the potential to reduce emotional prejudice and increase humanisation to its listeners based on stimulus context. So far, very little cross-disciplinary research has directly explored the possible links between music and socio-cultural scales, nor attempted to use this approach as a potential method of affecting mood in this manner. The significance of this project lies in the proposition that (predominantly) music-induced emotional stimuli have the potential to alter socio-cultural traits which are perceived to be negative by the majority of the population, through exposure to a variation of sensory input (music, videos) meant to “humanize” the other via emotional contagion. Potential findings will generate evidence which can alter the way we think about music and human behaviour in general. The empirical results may open up new avenues for exploring novel methodological approaches in how to combat xenophobia and racism, thus radically enhancing music’s potential as a method of increasing empathy.

Studies have suggested that visual imagery forms an important part of the listening experience and might be one of the mechanisms by which music induces emotions in a listener. However, little is known about the content, prevalence, and function of visual imagery during music listening. To that end, an online survey was constructed to explore music-related visual imagery. This included 24 statements about visual imagery based on previous research and an open question regarding the content of their inner images. Several standardized questionnaires (Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire and Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index) were included as well to investigate the link to visual imagery in non-musical contexts and across individuals with various levels of musical training. In total, 669 participants provided responses to an online survey. A factorial structure of music and visual imagery statements provided a three-factor structure consisting of vivid, soothing, and disruptive visual imagery, although the actual factor structure was nonidentical between the musically trained and untrained respondents. Separate analyses of factors for musically trained and untrained participants yielded a more parsimonious structure of visual imagery, which consisted of vivid and soothing visual imagery. These two factors consistently exhibited different weights across the items; for musically trained participants, vivid imagery was more related to modulating arousal than for untrained participants. The ability to conjure up vivid visual imagery was only weakly related to the presence of music-related visual imagery. A content analysis of the open question revealed common themes that related to a mixture of concrete visual imagery (landscapes, images of people, and scenes from past events) and abstract visual imagery (shapes, objects, and colors). Implications of these findings for further studies on music-induced emotions are discussed with a focus on a recent constructionist account of emotional meanings in music.
Loneliness detrimentally affects well-being and cognitive health, especially in older adults. The COVID-19 pandemic saw a marked increase in music usage for self-regulation, often with the explicit purpose of ‘keeping company’. Pilot data supports that this is not simply a figure of speech, but constitutes an empirical effect on thought, observable in the content of mental imagery during music listening. In the present project, we combine quantitative and qualitative methodologies to test personalised use of music as a cost-effective on-demand tool to alleviate feelings of loneliness in old age. Research goals:a) Test whether music induces thoughts of social interactions in younger (supported by pilot data) as well as older adults.b) Test whether music-induced thoughts of social interactions can alleviate feelings of loneliness in older adults.Scientific Significance & Industry Usability:Mental imagery is pivotal for self-regulation and therapies for mental health conditions, such as anxiety disorders and phobias. Understanding non-invasive means of influencing mental imagery allows insights into a key component of human cognition with potential to support evidence based cognitive therapies and develop cost-effective means to increase well-being in old age that could complement existing high-cost, high-effort interventions.
The project aims to pioneer an exploratory study on the role of music in shaping and producing religious experiences in the global Pentecostal Christian tradition. Specifically, we set out to understand how the soundscape of the 'Gitano Artist's church' in Madrid, a Gitano church known for its musical practices shaped by flamenco cultural traditions, contributes to the perception of sacred experiences as felt, narrated, and bodily expressed by Gitano believers. This innovative pilot research will employ a multi-method approach, combining ethnographic and music-psychological methods.Flamenco is a musical art form based on southern Spain's folkloric music traditions. Gitanos have played a leading role in shaping and popularising flamenco music, and flamenco holds an indisputable position in Gitano’s collective identity and sense of cultural heritage. Las palmas—a handclapping style–and quejios (shaking voices) indeed dominate Gitano churches' soundscape. Whereas some Gitano pastors and believers repudiate secular flamenco due to its strong cultural association with Gitano juergas (Gitano revelry) and the abuse of alcohol and drugs, often flamenco’s exuberant voice, tones and beats are re-signified in religious ritual contexts. By redirecting flamenco music for sacred ends, Gitanos use their musical identity to meet religious ends, such as worshipping God, pursuing sanctity, and reaffirming the moral ground of the group.The pilot project will harness the collective expertise of Dr Antonio Montañes Jimenez (UK), an expert on Gitano Pentecostalism and the Anthropology of Christianity, and Dr Mats Küsner (Germany), a musicologist and music psychologist specialising in mental imagery. The project will employ various research methods, including in-person participant observation, online qualitative surveys, and mental imagery methods based on drawings, and descriptions of feelings. The project will also benefit from the participation of Gregorio Carmona, a non-academic Pentecostal Gitano and flamenco musician, who has previously collaborated with Antonio Montañes Jimenez as an interlocutor and co-author in his PhD study on Gitano Pentecostalism.Ultimately, this seed-funded pilot project will provide interdisciplinary insights to illuminate how music, as a social and cultural phenomenon, may co-constitute human sacred experiences and emotional (visual) imagery about God, the future, and long-lasting personal identities.

The question of whether background music is able to enhance cognitive task performance is of interest to scholars, educators, and stakeholders in business alike. Studies have shown that background music can have beneficial, detrimental or no effects on cognitive task performance. Extraversion—and its postulated underlying cause, cortical arousal—is regarded as an important factor influencing the outcome of such studies. According to Eysenck’s theory of personality, extraverts’ cortical arousal at rest is lower compared to that of introverts. Scholars have thus hypothesized that extraverts should benefit from background music in cognitive tasks, whereas introverts’ performance should decline with music in the background. Reviewing studies that have considered extraversion as a mediator of the effect of background music on cognitive task performance, it is demonstrated that there is as much evidence in favour as there is against Eysenck’s theory of personality. Further, revisiting Eysenck’s concept of cortical arousal—which has traditionally been assessed by activity in the EEG alpha band—and reviewing literature on the link between extraversion and cortical arousal, it is revealed that there is conflicting evidence. Due to Eysenck’s focus on alpha power, scholars have largely neglected higher frequency bands in the EEG signal as indicators of cortical arousal. Based on recent findings, it is suggested that beta power might not only be an indicator of alertness and attention but also a predictor of cognitive task performance. In conclusion, it is proposed that focused music listening prior to cognitive tasks might be a more efficient way to boost performance than listening to background music during cognitive tasks.

As tantalizing as the idea that background music beneficially affects foreign vocabulary learning may seem, there is-partly due to a lack of theory-driven research-no consistent evidence to support this notion. We investigated inter-individual differences in the effects of background music on foreign vocabulary learning. Based on Eysenck's theory of personality we predicted that individuals with a high level of cortical arousal should perform worse when learning with background music compared to silence, whereas individuals with a low level of cortical arousal should be unaffected by background music or benefit from it. Participants were tested in a paired-associate learning paradigm consisting of three immediate word recall tasks, as well as a delayed recall task one week later. Baseline cortical arousal assessed with spontaneous EEG measurement in silence prior to the learning rounds was used for the analyses. Results revealed no interaction between cortical arousal and the learning condition (background music vs. silence). Instead, we found an unexpected main effect of cortical arousal in the beta band on recall, indicating that individuals with high beta power learned more vocabulary than those with low beta power. To substantiate this finding we conducted an exact replication of the experiment. Whereas the main effect of cortical arousal was only present in a subsample of participants, a beneficial main effect of background music appeared. A combined analysis of both experiments suggests that beta power predicts the performance in the word recall task, but that there is no effect of background music on foreign vocabulary learning. In light of these findings, we discuss whether searching for effects of background music on foreign vocabulary learning, independent of factors such as inter-individual differences and task complexity, might be a red herring. Importantly, our findings emphasize the need for sufficiently powered research designs and exact replications of theory-driven experiments when investigating effects of background music and inter-individual variation on task performance.
