Why is it that we tend to think about our lives as stories? Why do we strive to create coherent narratives that reflect a particular perspective? What happens when we discover multiple, perhaps conflicting perspectives in our narratives? Following groundbreaking work in the study of narrative identity in the last 20 years, the scholars of this volume have expanded and merged their theories of narrative identity with new perspectives in fields such as narratology, literary theory, philosophy, cultural studies, psychology, sociology, gender studies and history. Their contributions focus on the significance of perspective in the formation of narrative identities, probing the stratagems and narrative means of individuals in testing out personae for themselves.

Ferne Kontinente und fremde Länder bilden die Kulisse für die drei bislang erschienenen Romane Walter Abishs. Da der Autor weder Afrika, Deutschland noch Mexiko vor der Veröffentlichung der Romane jemals besucht hatte, kann eine topographisch-realistische Darstellung nicht seine Hauptabsicht gewesen sein. Im Gegenteil: A. scheint es sich zum Ziel gesetzt zu haben, der Sprache ihre wirklichkeitskonstituierende Macht zu nehmen. Fasziniert von den fremden Orten, strahlen die Romane etwas von dieser Fremdheit auch auf den Leser aus, da sie seltsam konstruiert erscheinen und kaum realistisch anmuten. Sowohl die Faszination fremder Topographien als auch der Konstruktcharakter der Texte lassen sich biographisch erklären. Als Kind einer jüdischen Kaufmannsfamilie in Wien verläßt A. nach dem ›Anschluß‹ Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich im Jahr 1938 seine Heimat und begibt sich auf eine Odyssee, die ihn fast um den gesamten Globus führen sollte. Nizza, Shanghai, Israel, England lauten die Stationen auf dem Weg in die USA, wo A. seit 1957 lebt. Ein Architekturstudium, das er in Israel absolvierte, mag vielleicht erklären, weshalb seine »houses of fiction« (Henry James) wie auf einem Reißbrett konstruierte Entwürfe anmuten.

Abstract This essay connects the mass-produced books of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, The Nancy Drew Mystery Stories since 1930 and the Hardy Boys Adventures since 1927, with the discourses of self-help and self-improvement and argues that the effects these books have on their young readers instigate the formation of a very specific (white, middle class) subjectivity. This modern mode of relating to oneself includes an adjustable, self-assertive, self-monitoring personality, which can be understood as an answer to the challenges of the Second Industrialization and the contingencies connected to the acceleration, fragmentation, de-familiarizations, and individualization of modernity. At the same time, the essay argues, the novels also include a very specific position in terms of gender, race, and class, which, in spite of the figure of Nancy Drew, remains fundamentally linked to the values of patriarchy, the middle class and whiteness.

Nach den Worten eines US-amerikanischen Kritikers schlug der 1984 erschienene Science-Fiction-Roman, in dem erstmals der Begriff „cyberspace“ begegnet, in die Sciene-Fiction-Szene ein wie eine Supernova. Während er von vielen als zukunftsweisend gefeiert wurde, sahen andere darin die Schaffung eines neuen Genres, das des ‚Cyberpunk‘ oder der ‚Punk-SF‘, das Elemente von Science-Fiction, des klassischen Detektivromans, des ‚film noir‘ sowie der Punk- und Hackerkultur der 1980er Jahre verbindet. Allerdings macht Gibson selbst Anleihen, etwa bei dem Film Blade Runner (1982).

Henry James’s novel The Portrait of a Lady is undisputedly one of the masterpieces of literary realism. Realism, in this context, means that the novel explores significant modern themes (a failed marriage, international relations, New Womanhood, psychological reality, the economies of mid-nineteenth century America and England, and dense social relations) and presents them from a variety of clearly defined observational perspectives. The Portrait of a Lady is acclaimed for the visual presentation of its material, which introduces specific spaces as meaningful frames for a more or less tragic plot. This plot is fired by protagonist Isabel Archer’s naivety and idealism and antagonist Gilbert Osmond’s exploitation of the women in his environment. It is also fired by a subtle social and racial position and a conspicuous queering of its figures. Above all, it remains an insightful treatment of fascinating characters and their efforts at observing and penetrating reality.
Karl Marx describes the political emancipation offered by the capitalist state as instituting a malicious separation between individual and communal being, between an individual's 'real' material life and the 'unreal' realm of citizenship. Post-Marxist American Studies scholarship is troubled by the way Marx's historical materialism in some of his most well-known volumes is caught within a Eurocentric dynamic, fixed on industrial capitalism, and theorizes labor in ways that marginalize slavery, colonialism, and the exploitation of women and children. In classic Marxism, historical materialism refers to Marx's theory that history moves from stage to stage as the material productive forces of a society come to outstrip that society's relations of production. Alex Rivera's near-future cyberpunk science-fiction film Sleep Dealer, the border between the United States and Mexico has been permanently closed to migrant laborers, but US corporations, agricultural businesses, and private households are still able to exploit the labor of Mexican workers through means of a dystopic new technology: node labor.

Starting with the narrator’s re-reading and interpretation of her own earlier diaries in Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel Fun Home, this essay explores several theoretical questions pertaining to historical narratology. The essay argues that historical narratology will work its way through several steps: 1) naming and describing specific innovations or transformations, 2) determining the functions of these changes, 3) identifying dynamic processes of change, 4) appraising the cultural meaning and significance of dynamic transformations, 5) suggesting causes (in conjunction with other discourses), and 6) presenting the findings in perspective views. However, these steps will not be pursued in a neat sequence, but will necessarily take place out of backward and forward movements, as a certain heuristic teleology cannot (and should not) be avoided.
