In high-dimensional data, one often seeks a few interesting low-dimensional projections that reveal important features of the data. Projection pursuit is a procedure for searching high-dimensional data for interesting low-dimensional projections via the optimization of a criterion function called the projection pursuit index.

This book describes an interactive statistical computing environment called 1 XploRe. As the name suggests, support for exploratory statistical analysis is given by a variety of computational tools. XploRe is a matrix-oriented statistical language with a comprehensive set of basic statistical operations that provides highly interactive graphics, as well as a programming environ ment for user-written macros; it offers hard-wired smoothing procedures for effective high-dimensional data analysis. Its highly dynamic graphic capa bilities make it possible to construct student-level front ends for teaching basic elements of statistics. Hot keys make it an easy-to-use computing environment for statistical analysis. The primary objective of this book is to show how the XploRe system can be used as an effective computing environment for a large number of statistical tasks. The computing tasks we consider range from basic data matrix manipulations to interactive customizing of graphs and dynamic fit ting of high-dimensional statistical models. The XploRe language is similar to other statistical languages and offers an interactive help system that can be extended to user-written algorithms. The language is intuitive and read ers with access to other systems can, without major difficulty, reproduce the examples presented here and use them as a basis for further investigation.

When we started the development of our CD to support the teaching of our basic statistic courses our work was twofold: we had to develop the content and the necessary software ourselves. Maintaining our software development in a university environment turned out to be especially difficult since it is time-consuming. At the same time the available open source software has become much more powerful such that our own development has become superfluous. The use of 'standard software' (wikis) allows us to concentrate more on content rather than on software development. In several projects we have used wikis to support the teaching of our students and to publish their projects and homework. However the introduction of the bachelor/master system has reduced the willingness of students to make contributions to our wikis. As a consequence we have now started to involve ourselves and our students in more direct contributions to the German Wikipedia.

In order to fully analyze spatial data, from satellite images to precision agricultural data, the user needs to do these three things: (1) display spatial locations and concomitant geographic variables on maps, (2) visualize these concomitant variables using more general interactive multivariate visualization methods, and (3) execute statistical analyses. At present, in order to accomplish those goals, three different kinds of software must be used: a Geographic Information System (GIS), a Dynamic Statistical Graphics (DSG) program, and a Statistical Computing Environment (SCE). We have developed a method to dynamically link three pieces of software, one in each category, so that they can exchange commands and data. The different data analytic and graphical methods of these packages complement each other. This linking increases ease and efficiency at all stages of spatial data analysis. The three programs are the GIS ArcView 3.0 TM , the DSG program XGobi, and the SCE XploRe 4. The A...

Modern computing equipment is present at schools and universities at all levels of education.4 In the statistical sciences computers offer great opportunities to enrich the learning process by the means of e.g. animations, software integration or on-the-fly computations. A personal review of different e-learning platforms for statistics is done in this paper. This review reveals facts that could be taken into account for future e-learning platforms in statistics. One of the most striking discoveries of our analysis is that students of statistics actually do not use electronic media in the desired frequency and actually rely more on print media such as books, copies of slides, etc.

Summary Students of introductory courses consider statistics as particularly difficult, as the understanding of the underlying concepts may require more time and energy than for other disciplines. For decades statisticians have tried to enhance understanding with the help of technical solutions such as animation, video or interactive tools. However, it is not clear if the added value generated by these e‐learning tools justifies the work invested. In this paper the experience with various e‐learning solutions in terms of utility and the impact on teaching is discussed.

E-learning plays an important role in education as it supports online education via computer networks and provides educational services by utilising information technologies. We present a case study describing the development of an Arabic language elearning course in statistics. Discussed are issues concerning e-learning in Arab countries with special focus on problems of the application of e-learning in the Arab world and the difficulties concerning the design Arabic platforms such as language problems, cultural and technical problems, especially ArabTeX works difficulty with LaTeX format. Thus Wiki is offered as a solution to such problems. Wiki supports LaTeX and other statistical programs, for instance R, and^Wiki offers the solution to language problems. Details of this technology are discussed and a solution as to how this system can serve in building an Arab platform is presented.

In teaching, factor analysis and principal component analysis are often used together, although they are quite different methods. We first summarise the similarities and differences between both approaches. From submitted theses it appears that student have difficulties seeing the differences. Although books and online resources mention some of the differences they are incomplete. A view either oriented on the similarities or the differences is reflected in software implementations. We therefore look at the implementations of factor analysis in Mplus, R and SPSS and finish with some conclusions for the teaching of Multivariate Statistics.

We describe the basics of MD*Book and MD*Book online which we use together with XploRe to create interactive electronic books. We generate different output formats (Postscript, PDF, HTML and MM*Stat-like formats) for the internet as well as for CD and/or local installation. The e-stat project for creating a knowledge base in statistics needs statistical input from various authors to cover a larger area in statistics. The teaching material, which we want to incorporate in the e-stat project, is already available in LATEX and we have used MD*Book to convert it from LATEX to HTML. Interactivity in our electronical books is incorporated via a applet which connects to XploRe - a statistical software. Thus we extended our tool MD*Book, and therefore also MD*Book online, such that we can generate the XML file (and further files) which are the base for an e-stat module. We first describe MD*Book and MD*Book online. Finally we describe the conversion process and show an reused example from MM*Stat as e-stat module.

With the availability of the net a new generation of computing environments has to be designed for a large scale of statistical tasks ranging from data analysis to highly interactive operations. It must combine the flexibility of multi window desktops with standard operations and interactive user driven actions. It must be equally well suited for first year students and for high demanding researchers. Its design must has various degrees of flexibility that allow to address different levels of user groups. We present here some ideas how a new generation of a computing environment can be used as a student front end tool for teaching elementary statistics as well as a research device for highly computer intensive tasks, e.g. for semiparametric analysis and bootstrapping.
The ArcView/XGobi/XploRe Environment: Technical Details and Applications for Spatial Data Analysis

: This article describes the dynamic linking of three software packages to allow spatial data analysis within one single software environment. The work presented here is an extension into a third direction of an existing link: The statistical computing environment XploRe has been added to the bidirectional link between the Geographic Information System (GIS) ArcView 3.0 TM and the dynamic statistical graphics (DSG) program XGobi. This article presents information about the technical realization of the link and provides an example how to conduct spatial data analysis in the ArcView/XGobi/XploRe environment. 1. Introduction This paper reports on a dynamic link among the Geographic Information System (GIS) ArcView 3.0 TM , the dynamic statistical graphics (DSG) program XGobi (Swayne, Cook & Buja 1997), and the statistical computing environment XploRe (Hardle, Klinke & Turlach 1995). This link allows us to accomplish three things in a single environment: (1) display spatial location...
