The contributors to this volume on the literary and editorial history of the books from Genesis to Joshua present a collection of programmatic papers dealing with the history of research and individual points of exegesis which demonstrate the problematic nature of the Yahwist hypothesis and take new approaches to an interpretation of the redaction history of the Hexateuch, particularly in the parts not emanating from the priestly code. Abstract Ps XLIX bildet, abzüglich der Überschrift und der Glossen in V 9 und V 15* (), eine literarisch einheitliche Meditation über das allgemeine Todesgeschick. Die des Sterbens aller Menschen kontrastiert der Psalmist mit der Hoffnung auf postmortale Auslösung seiner Seele () aus der Scheol. In V 15-6 deutet sich die von der Unsterblichkeit der Seele als eines von der äußeren Gestalt () Menschen zu unterscheidenden, dabei dessen Identität wahrenden Aspekts an. für die Theologie des Psalms ist die Verbindung von Glaube und Einsichtig zu sein () bedeutet, zwischen Leben und Tod bzw. Gottesmacht Menschenmacht differenzieren zu können und angesichts der Rätselhaftigkeit der auf den den Tod überwindenden Gott zu vertrauen. Literatur- und religionsgeschichtlich gehört der Psalm aufgrund seiner Parallelen zu Kohelet und zu Äthhen xcviii wohl in die zweite Hälfte des 3. Jh. v. Chr.

This chapter pursues the question of what literary and theological function the references to Torah in its shape of Deuteronomy fulfil in the book of Job. As far as the methodology is concerned, the author uses elements of a tradition-historical and redaction-historical approach. In other words, he is guided by the authors of the book of Job and their use of set texts and uncovers the purpose of such a textual reception and allusion to texts from Deuteronomy in each individual context. As such, his approach follows the model of inner-biblical exegesis or exegetical extension ( auslegende Fortschreibung ) of known texts. In the light of the various forms of intertextual markers, close attention has to be paid to structural intertextuality. To the extent that Deuteronomy can be understood as the heart of the Torah, one can describe the book of Job as a critical discourse on the Torah. Abstract This essay briefly traces the history of research into Wisdom genres (Gattungen) in the Old Testament. It outlines the following as essential linguistic, semantic, and pragmatic criteria of a Wisdom genre: (1) a horizontal form of communication that contains a dialogical element, even in monologues or didactic poems; (2) terminology that is directed at knowledge; and (3) a pedagogical focus. Two major genres can be distinguished in the literary history of Israelite-Jewish Wisdom: the instructional book and the commentary. In the Old Testament, only the instructional book is found. Its sub-genres include instruction, to which belong also treatise and testament as well as diatribe and protreptic, the didactic poem, with its special variants of the Wisdom psalm and the meditation, didactic dialogue, which can develop into dispute, and the didactic story. The smallest common linguistic unit of the poetically composed Wisdom texts is the saying. Intra-textual commentaries are offered by the “Praise of the Fathers” in the book of Ben Sira (Sir 44–49) and the “midrash on Exodus” in the Wisdom of Solomon (Wis 11–19). Extra-textual commentaries are performed by Jewish-Hellenistic exegetes, by Philo, and the pesharim from Qumran.
