Prof. Dr. Diana Lange

Prof. Diana Lange erforscht die Kulturgeschichte und Wissensproduktion zu Tibet und Ostasien, mit aktuellem Schwerpunkt auf der Kartographiegeschichte und Materialität von Karten. Sie untersucht historische Kartensammlungen (etwa die Wise Collection aus dem 19. Jahrhundert) und analysiert systematisch, wie Farben auf handgezeichneten und handkolorierten Karten Bedeutung, Lesbarkeit und gesellschaftliche Kontexte prägen — kombiniert dabei kunsthistorische Interpretation mit materialwissenschaftlichen Methoden. Parallel dokumentiert sie bedrohte Handwerkspraktiken und Sprachen in Bhutan und Tibet. Für Museen, Archive und Kulturinstitutionen bietet ihr Ansatz neue Methoden zur Provenienzforschung, Konservierung und Interpretation historischer Kartenbestände; für Dekolonialisierungsprojekte liefert sie Werkzeuge zur Dekodierung eurozentrischer Wissensproduktion über nicht-europäische Regionen.

• An Atlas of the Himalayas by a 19th Century Tibetan Lama

  Diana Lange's patient investigations have, in this wonderful piece of detective work, solved the mysteries of six extraordinary panoramic maps of routes across Tibet and the Himalayas, clearly hand-drawn in the late 1850s by a local artist, known as the British Library's Wise Collection. Diana Lange now reveals not only the previously unknown identity of the Scottish colonial official who commissioned the maps from a Tibetan Buddhist lama, but also the story of how the Wise Collection came to be in the British Library. The result is both a spectacular illustrated ethnographic atlas and a unique compendium of knowledge concerning the mid-19th century Tibetan world, as well as a remarkable account of an academic journey of discovery. It will entertain and inform anyone with an interest in this fascinating region. This large format book is lavishly illustrated in colour and includes four separate large foldout maps.

  Colour on maps is a key component in their use and meaning. Hitherto, however, the terms by which the different categories of the purpose of colour are usually described tend to be inconsistent. The aim in this brief note is to discuss these terminologies and suggest a working definition for each, with a view to establishing, in the longer term, an explicit methodology for the study of colour on maps. To illustrate the three key terms discussed here, particular reference is made to manuscript maps and hand-coloured woodblock prints produced in East Asia, especially in Korea and China before the twentieth century.
