Abstract This is a compact review of recent results on supersymmetric Wilson loops in ABJ(M) and related theories. It aims to be a quick introduction to the state of the art in the field and a discussion of open problems. It is divided into short chapters devoted to different questions and techniques. Some new results, perspectives and speculations are also presented. We hope this might serve as a baseline for further studies of this topic.

We evaluate the exact one-loop partition function for fundamental strings whose world surface ends on a cusp at the boundary of AdS(4) and has a 'jump' in CP3. This allows us to extract the stringy prediction for the ABJM-generalized cusp anomalous dimension Gamma(ABJM)(cusp) (phi, theta) up to NLO in sigma-model perturbation theory. With a similar analysis, we present the exact partition functions for folded closed string solutions moving in the AdS(3) parts of AdS(4) x CP3 and AdS(3) x S-3 x S-3 x S-1 backgrounds. Results are obtained applying to the string solutions relevant for the AdS(4)/CFT3 and AdS(3)/CFT2 correspondence the tools previously developed for their AdS(5) x S-5 counterparts.

The anomalous dimensions of planar N=4 SYM theory operators like tr(ΦD+SΦ) expanded in large spin S have the asymptotics γ=flnS+fc+1S(f11lnS+f10)+⋯ , where f (the universal scaling function or cusp anomaly), fc and fmn are given by power series in the 't Hooft coupling λ. The subleading coefficients appear to be related by the so-called functional relation and parity (reciprocity) property of the function expressing γ in terms of the conformal spin of the collinear group. Here we study the structure of such large spin expansion at strong coupling via AdS/CFT, i.e. by using the dual description in terms of folded spinning string in AdS5. The large spin expansion of the classical string energy happens to have exactly the same structure as that of γ in the perturbative gauge theory. Moreover, the functional relation and the reciprocity constraints on the coefficients are also satisfied. We compute the leading string 1-loop corrections to the coefficients fc, f11, f10 and verify the functional/reciprocity relations at subleading 1λ order. This provides a strong indication that these relations hold not only in weak coupling (gauge-theory) but also in strong coupling (string-theory) perturbative expansions.

We study the strong coupling behaviour of 1/4-BPS circular Wilson loops (a family of “latitudes”) in $$ \mathcal{N}=4 $$ Super Yang-Mills theory, computing the one-loop corrections to the relevant classical string solutions in AdS5 ×S5. Supersymmetric localization provides an exact result that, in the large ’t Hooft coupling limit, should be reproduced by the sigma-model approach. To avoid ambiguities due to the absolute normalization of the string partition function, we compare the ratio between the generic latitude and the maximal 1/2-BPS circle: any measure-related ambiguity should simply cancel in this way. We use the Gel’fand-Yaglom method with Dirichlet boundary conditions to calculate the relevant functional determinants, that present some complications with respect to the standard circular case. After a careful numerical evaluation of our final expression we still find disagreement with the localization answer: the difference is encoded into a precise “remainder function”. We comment on the possible origin and resolution of this discordance.

We revisit the computation of the 1-loop string correction to the “latitude” minimal surface in AdS 5 × S 5 representing 1/4 BPS Wilson loop in planar $$ \mathcal{N}=4 $$ SYM theory previously addressed in arXiv:1512.00841 and arXiv:1601.04708 . We resolve the problem of matching with the subleading term in the strong coupling expansion of the exact gauge theory result (derived previously from localization) using a different method to compute determinants of 2d string fluctuation operators. We apply perturbation theory in a small parameter (angle of the latitude) corresponding to an expansion near the AdS 2 minimal surface representing 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loop. This allows us to compute the corrections to the heat kernels and zeta-functions of the operators in terms of the known heat kernels on AdS 2. We apply the same method also to two other examples of Wilson loop surfaces: generalized cusp and k-wound circle.

We discuss some geometrical aspects of the semiclassical quantization of string solutions in type IIB Green–Schwarz action on ${{\\rm{AdS}}}_{5}\\times {{\\rm{S}}}^{5}.$ We concentrate on quadratic fluctuations around classical configurations, expressing the relevant differential operators in terms of (intrinsic and extrinsic) invariants of the background geometry. The aim of our exercise is to present some compact expressions encoding the spectral properties of bosonic and fermionic fluctuations. The appearing of non-trivial structures on the relevant bundles and their role in concrete computations are also considered. We corroborate the presentation of general formulas by working out explicitly a couple of relevant examples, namely the spinning string and the latitude BPS Wilson loop.

The four loop universal anomalous dimension of twist-2 operators in N=4 SYM has been recently conjectured. In this paper, we prove that it obeys a generalized Gribov-Lipatov reciprocity, previously known to hold at the three loop level.

In this Letter we evaluate Wilson coefficients for “deep inelastic scattering” (DIS) in N=4 SYM theory at NLO in perturbation theory, using as a probe an R-symmetry conserved current. They exhibit uniform transcendentality and coincide with the piece of highest transcendentality in the corresponding QCD Wilson coefficients. We extract from the QCD result a NNLO prediction for the N=4 SYM Wilson coefficient, and comment on the features of its Regge limit asymptotics.

Planar 𝒩 = 4 SYM theory and QCD share the gluon sector, suggesting the investigation of Gribov‐Lipatov reciprocity in the supersymmetric theory. Since the AdS/CFT correspondence links 𝒩 = 4 SYM and superstring dynamics on AdS 5 × S 5 , reciprocity is also expected to show up in the quantum corrected energies of certain classical string configurations dual to gauge theory twist‐operators. We review recent results confirming this picture and revisiting the old idea of Gribov‐Lipatov reciprocity as a modern theoretical tool useful for the study of open problems in AdS/CFT.

We make a further step in the analytically exact quantization of spinning string states in semiclassical approximation, by evaluating the exact one-loop partition function for a class of two-spin string solutions for which quadratic fluctuations form a non-trivial system of coupled modes. This is the case of a folded string in the SU(2) sector, in the limit described by a quantum Landau-Lifshitz model. The same applies to the full bosonic sector of fluctuations over the folded spinning string in AdS(5) with an angular momentum J in S-5. Fluctuations are governed by a special class of fourth-order differential operators, with coefficients being meromorphic functions on the torus, which we are able to solve exactly.

We consider possible discretizations for a gauge-fixed Green-Schwarz action of Type IIB superstring. We use them for measuring the action, from which we extract the cusp anomalous dimension of planar $$ \mathcal{N}=4 $$ SYM as derived from AdS/CFT, as well as the mass of the two AdS excitations transverse to the relevant null cusp classical string solution. We perform lattice simulations employing a Rational Hybrid Monte Carlo (RHMC) algorithm and two Wilson-like fermion discretizations, one of which preserves the global SO(6) symmetry the model. We compare our results with the expected behavior at various values of $$ g=\frac{\sqrt{\lambda }}{4\pi } $$ . For both the observables, we find a good agreement for large g, which is the perturbative regime of the sigma-model. For smaller values of g, the expectation value of the action exhibits a deviation compatible with the presence of quadratic divergences. After their non-perturbative subtraction the continuum limit can be taken, and suggests a qualitative agreement with the non-perturbative expectation from AdS/CFT. Furthermore, we detect a phase in the fermion determinant, whose origin we explain, that for small g leads to a sign problem not treatable via standard reweigthing. The continuum extrapolations of the observables in the two different discretizations agree within errors, which is strongly suggesting that they lead to the same continuum limit. Part of the results discussed here were presented earlier in [1].

In this contribution it is shown how closed formulas for anomalous dimensions of two classes of operators in N=4 SYM can be derived, either by investigating the numerics or on the basis of QCD-inspired assumptions. We discuss the case of twist three "gauge" operators in which a complete proof of reciprocity can be carried out.

We reconsider the problem of discretizing the worldsheet for the gauge-fixed Green-Schwarz superstring on a null cusp background, and present a setup which fully preserves its global $U(1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}SU(4)$ symmetry. We discuss divergences by power counting on the lattice, and study renormalizability at one loop with the example of one-point functions and one bosonic correlator of the worldsheet excitations. In order to remove UV divergences at one loop, it is necessary to introduce two extra parameters in the action, which need to be either fine-tuned at tree level or renormalized at one loop.
