  This article investigates the governmental measures and policies adopted by Germany in the wake of the “long summer of migration” of 2015 to put refugees to work. Starting with a discussion of the autonomy of migration approach against the background of the multiple transformations and crises of the European border regime, the authors focus on shifting paradigms in the management of labor mobility. A short review of the emerging field of “critical logistics studies” allows them to single out a process of “logistification” of migration regimes, according to a “delivery” rationality instantiated by the policy goal of a “just-in-time and to-the-point” migration. This hypothesis is tested with respect to Germany on the basis of research conducted by the authors in Berlin, particularly focusing on the roles played by a complex system and infrastructure of intermediation to manage the “integration” of refugees into the labor market.

  This article takes as a starting point a tenants’ initiative pursued predominantly by migrants in inner-city Berlin, the capital of a country considered to have profited from Europe’s debt and financial crisis of 2007–8. The two-year-long protest can be read within the framework of a series of public urban occupations during and after the crisis. This framing allows an investigation of how the dominance of finance in capitalism “hits the ground” and how frontiers of capital open up new territories to establish conditions for accumulation in the world’s cities. The article focuses on the political technologies that drive policy protocols of “integration” and “social diversity” and arrange the parameters of differential inclusion within which the business of privatization of real estate and social housing unfolds. It also asks how cultural, political, and social contestations develop in a society where few areas are unaffected by migration and mobility. In so doing, the article challenges an approach that assumes a national framework of analysis.

  Die Migrationsforschung hat seit den 1990er Jahren eine grundsatzliche Wende hin zu einer transnationalen Perspektive vollzogen, die nicht nur sie, sondern auch die an ihr beteiligten Disziplinen nachhaltig beeinflusst und verandert hat. Dem Anspruch nach soll Forschung seither – wie das Subjekt, mit dem es sich beschaftigt – selbst mobil werden und nationalstaatliche Grenzen uberschreiten. Im Berliner Labor Migration haben wir uns mit dem Potenzial, aber auch den Fallstricken dieser Wende beschaftigt. Denn, so eine unserer Ausgangsthesen, transnationale Mobilisierung wurde bislang zu einem methodisch wichtigen Schritt, der jedoch in seinen konzeptionellen und theoretischen Konsequenzen fur die Migrationsforschung noch keineswegs zu Ende gedacht worden ist. Relativ schnell kristallisierte sich bei unserer kritischen Bestandsaufnahme als Kernproblematik heraus, dass sich das Gros auch der transnational orientierten Migrationsforschung allzu haufig als Forschung uber MigrantInnen versteht und daher insgesamt – polemisch zugespitzt – kaum hinauskommt uber eine nach Herkunften sortierte »Migrantologie« unterschiedlicher Ethno-Communities, wenn auch in neuem raumlichen Masstab. An immer weiteren solcher Communities wird in immer neuen Varianten die immer gleiche Geschichte eines transnationalen, mehrortigen Lebens erzahlt. Die Exklusivitat solcher Erzahlungen macht Migration zu einem abgesonderten Forschungsfeld der fremden Minderheiten am Rand der Gesellschaft und konstruiert ihren Gegenpart – die (weise) sesshafte Nation als Zentrum – gleich mit.

  Der Beitrag analysiert, wie digitale Plattformen urbanes Arbeiten und Leben ebenso verändern wie die gelebte Räumlichkeit und die materielle Architektur der Stadt. Davon sind nicht nur Arbeitsverhältnisse berührt, sondern auch alltägliche Formen und Praktiken von Mobilität, Konsum oder Reproduktion. Basierend auf umfassenden ethnografischen Forschungen beschreiben wir erstens den Aufstieg der Plattformarbeit in Berlin, insbesondere am Beispiel von Uber, Deliveroo und Helpling. Wir nehmen neue Formen algorithmischer Organisation, Kontrolle und Überwachung von Arbeit im Stadtraum in den Blick und zeigen, dass Plattformarbeit primär migrantisch ist. Davon ausgehend skizzieren wir zweitens die Umrisse eines entstehenden Plattform-Urbanismus. Das umfasst sowohl ein Verständnis der Räume und Geografien digitaler Plattformen als auch eine theoretische Perspektivierung des Begriffs. Drittens betonen wir, dass kritische Analysen des emergenten Plattform-Urbanismus zeigen können, wie Plattformen darauf abzielen, unverzichtbare urbane Infrastrukturen zu werden. Allerdings zeigt sich, dass diese Infrastrukturwerdung urbaner Plattformen kein reibungsloser Prozess ist, sondern politisch und ökonomisch umkämpft.

  This article offers a collectively developed analysis of the Covid-19 crisis as it relates to contemporary cultures of rejection, i.e. the socio-cultural conditions in which authoritarian and right-wing populist politics thrive, in Europe. We explore how the pandemic and its management reinforces, transforms and/or overrides existing antagonisms and institutes new ones in Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Germany and Sweden. We discuss how the Covid-19 crisis affects the rise of new statisms; gendered patterns of social reproduction; mobility and migration; digital infrastructures; and new political mobilizations.

  Is anti-racism a useful method to understand racism’s morphologies today? This chapter attempts to respond theoretically, and by drawing on the archive of historical struggles against racism, to the challenge that contemporary racism poses on us in its transformation across time and space. Understanding (a) racism as an episteme allows us to develop (b) a relational understanding of racism, and (c) one that analyses the current conjuncture of racism as one determined, organised, and reorganised though struggle – in social and political confrontations that produce, reproduce, and transform their opponents (which can be manifold) in their identity and formation. The chapter engages with anti-racism as part of labour history, in the colonial context, and in migration struggles, and what this means for a method of inquiry, and as a perspective of inquiry to come to terms with the variegated space and heterogeneity of racist articulations and practices in our world.

Zuerst in Frankreich erschienen, wurde das Buch in neun Sprachen übersetzt. Seine zentralen Einsichten haben bis heute nichts an Relevanz verloren. Die hier versammelten Texte internationaler Autorinnen und Autoren positionieren die in »Rasse, Klasse, Nation« untersuchte Frage nach der grundlegenden Verbindung des Rassismus mit Klassenverhältnissen und Nationalismus im globalen Kontext. Sie untersuchen die historische und aktuelle Rezeption des Buches in zwanzig verschiedenen regionalen Kontexten weltweit – von Griechenland und Italien über Schweden und Russland bis Israel und Palästina, Südkorea und die USA. Zudem ermöglichen Diskussionsergebnisse aus Workshops u. a. in Ankara, Belgrad, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Kolkata und Kapstadt neue Perspektiven auf die Konjunkturen der drei zentralen Kategorien Rasse, Klasse und Nation und damit eine Re-Lektüre des einflussreichen Werkes.

  I comment on David Theo Goldberg’s Are We all Postracial Yet? by interpreting it as a programmatic essay towards a new conjunctural analysis of a globalizing racism, and as an emerging globalizing dialogue against racism. In the spirit of Goldberg’s book I relate these two modes of critical engagement in order to open a global perspective through which a relational understanding of racism can be formulated with respect to two neoliberal contexts, continental Europe and the United States. To this end I draw on the work of Étienne Balibar and in particular his early consideration of ‘neo-racism’.

  Digitisation has profoundly changed the spatial constitution and economic geography of contemporary capitalism, from the micro-architecture of production in a single office or factory, to the ways we buy, sell and consume goods and services up to global circulatory systems. Concerning the latter, digital computing has revolutionised and accelerated the logistics industry in a way that can be compared to the impact of the standard shipping container in the 1960s.1 Shipping software, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, Global Positioning System (GPS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and other digital technologies which organise, capture and control the movement of things, finance and people, are at the heart of contemporary logistics.2 Digitised logistics transform the spatial ordering of circulation and production; ports, harbours, corridors, special economic zones and other forms of logistical space are created and rearranged, new value chains emerge, others cease to exist. The digitised logistics of circulation accordingly constitute the space of global capitalism as relational, infrastructural, and changing dynamically.
