En este trabajo se analizan el impacto y las dificultades de la instalación de los medios de comunicación, en particular la telegrafía, a la que se le atribuyó la creación de un espacio comunicado a escala continental. Primero, se hará referencia a Domingo F. Sarmiento, como uno de los protagonistas de los proyectos de telegrafía y ferrocarril propios del Siglo XIX. En segundo lugar, aparecerá la expedición del ingeniero militar Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon quien, algunas décadas más tarde, con la colocación de una línea telegráfica en el sertão brasileño, marca, sin embargo, el fin del siglo de la telegrafía con hilos. Y finalmente, se volverá a la línea Rondon unos veinte años más tarde, cuando en 1938 Claude Lévi-Strauss viaja "sobre la línea" encontrando aquellos sistemas de comunicación precolombinos que pudieron haber existido entre ambas Américas.

En 1999 se cumplieron doscientos años del inicio del viaje a América de Alexander von Humboldt y de Aimé Bonpland, viaje que se extendería entre los años 1799 y 1804. Los datos recolectados fueron de tal magnitud que Humboldt trabajó en ellos durante los siguientes treinta años de su vida, publicando sus conclusiones y observaciones en varias obras. Hay varios aspectos del viaje de Humboldt que lo hacen relevante hasta el día de hoy. En primer lugar, el nuevo corpus de datos científicos; pero, no menos importante, la aparición de un saber transdisciplinario e intercultural y los efectos que esto tuvo sobre las emergentes naciones americanas.

On July 6, 1884, the law of accident insurance, an act with far-reaching consequences, became effective in the German Reich, marking the beginning of a social and legal policy that gave the modern state a new shape as a “société assurancielle.” Following the establishment of private accident insurance in the wake of the expansion of the railways, the introduction of a liability law in 1871, and the implementation of health insurance in 1883, the 1884 legislation created a new conception of what constituted an accident. Thereby the role of the physician was transformed; doctors became “surveyors” [Gutachter] who must establish whether an accident was an “adequate cause” of an injury and then assess its impact on the victim and the insurance company. Trauma as a consequence of accidents occupies a peculiar place in the realm of accident medicine: From “railway spine” and “railway brain” to “traumatic neurosis,” physical injuries increasingly lose importance and attention gradually shifts to the psychic sphere. Henceforth, the accident takes the form of psychic trauma and shock and enters the realm of psychiatry. The clinical picture of traumatic neurosis described in 1884 by the German neurologist Hermann Oppenheim establishes a direct link between accident and injury. It is not a matter of external and corporeal injury, but rather of a “pathologically altered psyche with abnormal reactions” that, according to Oppenheim, derives from a psychic shock.

Die Ausstellung +ultra. gestaltung schafft wissen des Exzellenzclusters Bild Wissen Gestaltung. Ein Interdisziplinäres Labor der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin zeigte die grundlegende Bedeutung gestalterischer Prozesse in den Wissenschaften auf. Ob Faustkeil oder digital vernetztes Organ, aktives Material oder bildgesteuerte Handlung, +ultra thematisierte, wie sich menschliche und technologische Kräfte verschränken und welche Anforderungen daraus für unsere Gegenwart entstehen. Zudem werden in diesem Band auch die verschiedenen Vermittlungsformate vorgestellt. Von der Idee geleitet, das Wissen der Besucher_innen in die Vermittlung miteinzubeziehen, wurden das web-basierte Spiel game(+ultra) und mit wissen schafft fragen ein von Studierenden konzipierter und dialogisch geführter Spaziergang durch die Ausstellung entwickelt.

Folding "is at work everywhere," 1 it bends and weaves, it manifests and creates, it nourishes and is nourished, it operates materially and materializes operationally.Nature, and, one might claim, organic matter, is modulated through and impregnated by folding: one might wonder whether there is a limit to folding within and outside the organic realm of matter, since it seems to involve all scales, from the largest -as with inorganic geological folding processes -to the smallest -as with the DNA molecule.Folding can be taken as a materialized operation: some frogs fold leaves to secure their eggs, 2 while chimpanzees fold leaves to swallow them whole. 3Some trees fold their leaves while it rains or after certain hours. 4 As a spatial operation, folding can occur in at least three different dimensions.One-dimensional linear folding of fibers, two-dimensional planar folding of strata, leaves or surfaces, and three-dimensional folding of bodies can all be considered as various, spatial and architectural layers of matter as well as geometrical processes of folding. 5Back to the most basic of organic levels, the protein, the brain or the embryo, as what one might call the beginning of life or its basic units, materialize operationally through and by folding and folds.Proteins fold themselves 1

El trabajo analiza la descripción estadística de México que Humboldt realiza en su Ensayo sobre el estado político de Nueva España como una forma específica de administración y representación de datos de diferentes fuentes para crear un nuevo objeto. Hacia el principio del siglo xix, el desarrollo de sistemas de diagramas topográficos reemplazando las tablas estadísticas vuelven posible una nueva economía y operacionalidad de los signos; es decir, hacer visible, legible, transferible y almacenable el mayor volumen de datos con la menor cantidad posible de signos, en un espacio visual en el que se superponen las formulas, la escritura y las imágenes y desaparecen los tradicionales límites entre texto e imagen. Es el uso de dichas técnicas mediales, aplicadas tanto a la observación de la naturaleza como del Estado, lo que da lugar a un segundo “descubrimiento científico” de las Américas.

Die Formen der Ähnlichkeit stellt Michel Foucault in ›Die Ordnung der Dinge‹ als den epistemischen Raum der Renaissance dar, in dem Worte und Dinge, Gelesenes und Geschriebenes auf einer Ebene Zusammentreffen und eine engmaschige Wissensordnung ergeben.59 Wenn der Arzt Robert Bayfield noch 1655 den Zusammenhang von Mensch und Universum auf die Formel bringt, daß der Mensch eine epitome or map of the universe60 ist, dann wird damit die Karte als Medium der Ähnlichkeit schlechthin zwischen Mikrokosmos und Makrokosmos bestimmt. Und wenn der Mensch als eine solche Karte der Sichtbarkeit erscheint, verweben sich Landschaft, menschlicher Körper und Himmelssphären, gehen kosmologisches, kartographisches und anatomisches Wissen ineinander über. Diese Transparenz der Dinge jedoch scheint am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts zu verschwinden; dabei zeichnet sich ein Umbruch von der mikro-/ makrokosmischen Ähnlichkeit zu einem System der Repräsentation ab, in dem Worte und Dinge in ein neues Spiel der Zeichen eintreten.61 An die Stelle der Signaturen- Lektüre, bei der die Ordnung den Dingen einfach abgelesen wird, tritt die Arbeit der Geometer, Anatomen und Exerziermeister, die diese Ordnung erst herzustellen haben. Dieser Umbruch in der Zeichenstruktur soll an einem topographischen Dispositiv um 1600, d.h. an den verschiedenen topographischen Techniken einer Wissensproduktion verfolgt werden. Während der topographische Zusammenhang von Körper und Landschaft im Ähnlichkeitswissen der Renaissance in einer spezifischen Körperlandschaft kulminiert, strukturiert sich dieser Zusammenhang unter den Bedingungen der Repräsentation in neuartiger Weise, wobei die Körperlandschaften verschwinden.

The idea of physical reality usually refers to the rigidity and resistance of materials that are regarded as the fundamental stuff out of which our world is built or the ground on which it rests. Above all, solid materials relate to a more general notion of matter. This classical idea is based on the fundamental dichotomies of matter and form, and matter and activity, whereby form appears to be imposed from the outside on amorphic matter, transforming it into objects, and matter, as a fundamentally passive substance, seems to be externally activated, and in this way to undergo a transformation from rest to process. 1 Following these principlesabove all, since industrializationour technology, instruments, objects, and devices have been designed based on materials with controllable behaviors that can be standardized as properties. Hence, solid and rigid materials such as iron, steel, or concrete were considered suitable as stable and reliable components for machinery, bridges, or buildings, whereas elastic materials such as rubber, fiber tissues, or plastics permitted the design of flexible structures. In all these cases, form, activity, or special functions are externally implemented and define materials as their passive carrier.
