Few problem areas of the disciplines concerned with textual interpretation have led to such intensive and controversial discussion as the relationships between literature and knowledge. This textbook aims to document the most important approaches and research perspectives, to introduce productive models and analyse exemplary variants of the interplay between literature and knowledge orders. A glossary gives rapid access to central terms; a comprehensive bibliography allows the reader to consult further material on the topic. Diese Einfuhrung richtet sich an Studierende im germanistischen Grundstudium. Sie vermittelt die zentralen Konzepte und Methoden der Literaturwissenschaft und zugleich die wichtigsten Techniken des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens. Ausgewahlte Beispiele aus Lyrik, Prosa und Dramatik eines Autors bilden die Grundlage, um Fragen der sachgerechten Interpretation und historischen Einordnung von fiktionalen Texten zu eroertern, z. Conspiracy theories hold an unending fascination. As early as the 17th century, stories were in circulation of the allegedly omnipotent Jesuit Order and its global activities. 18th century journalists observe the numerous secret societies and search for the hidden processes of human machinations. In the Age of Enlightenment, “unknown high-ups” are seemingly at work everywhere; “disguised” and working with “invisible venom” they direct bad fortune or plan the overthrow of the established order. The present study is the first to use broadly-based material to present a comprehensive reconstruction of the literary composition of conspiracy scenarios between 1750 and 1850.

Voruberlegungen. „Von der Dichtkunst und von ihren Gattungen, welche Wirkung eine jede hat und wie man die Handlungen zusammenfugen mus, wenn die Dichtung gut sein soll, ferner aus wie vielen und was fiir Teilen eine Dichtung besteht, und ebenso auch von den anderen Dingen, die zu demselben Thema gehoren, wollen wir hier handeln, indem wir der Sache gemas zuerst das untersuchen, was das erste ist.1 Mit einer programmatischen Bestimmung von Gegenstand und Methode beginnt die im europaischen Kulturraum wohl wichtigste und folgenreichste Darstellung des (antiken) Wissens uber poetische Texte. Was Aristoteles um 335 v. Chr. den Angehorigen seiner Bildungseinrichtung Lykeion vortrug und als Teil seiner esoterischen, d. h. nicht fur die Offentlichkeit gedachten Lehre aufzeichnen lies, ist jedoch mehr als nur einer der An fange einer systematischen Beschaftigung mit literarischen Texten. Die demonstrative Behandlung der „Dichtkunst selbst und ihrer Gattungen — von denen nur die Ab schnitte uber Epos und Tragodie erhalten sind stellt zugleich ein erstes (uberliefertes) Lehrwerk fur den methodisch regulierten Umgang mit poetischen Produktionen dar, dessen Begriffe und Verfahren noch heutige Lehrbucher pragen.2 In dieser mehrfach dimensionierten Qualitat — einerseits systematisierte Reflexion uber allgemeine Eigenschaften und Wirkungsweisen literarischer Texte, andererseits ein Lehrwerk zur Vermittlung eben dieser wesentlichen Kategorien und Verfahren zu sein markiert Aristoteles' Poetik den Einsatzpunkt einer langen Entwicklung, die uber verschiedene Etappen bis zu den diversen Textumgangsformen der gegenwartigen

ZusammenfassungBei der Erzeugung, Darstellung und Verbreitung von Wissensansprüchen spielen metaphorische Ausdrücke eine ebenso zentrale wie problematische Rolle: Obwohl faktisch unauflöslich mit sprachlicher Kommunikation — und also auch mit dem im Medium der Sprache realisierten Diskurs der Wissenschaft — verbunden, waren und sind ihre kognitiven Qualitäten und Leistungen umstritten; und auch wenn selten ihre Verwendung überhaupt gemeint ist (und zumeist ihr unzutreffender Einsatz bzw. ihr Gebrauch zur Durchsetzung falscher Ziele kritisiert wird), reichen die Stellungnahmen zum Metapherngebrauch von vehementer Ablehnung bis zu emphatischer Affirmation. Hintergrund der kontroversen Positionen ist ein traditionsreiches Konfliktfeld, in dem sich unterschiedliche Annahmen zu Erzeugung und Darstellung, Entdek-kung und Begründung sowie zu Klassifizierung und Bewertung von wissenschaftlichem Wissen überlagern: Während metaphorischer Rede und dem ihr zugrundeliegenden analogischen Schlußprinzip in Aristoteles’ Rhetorik eine heuristische Funktion bei der Entdeckung von Erkenntnissen zugebilligt wurde und das in Metaphern formulierte Erfassen von »Ähnlichem in weit auseinanderliegenden Dingen« nicht nur in seinem Konzept der phrónesis — der auf Wahrscheinlichkeit zielenden Klugheit — eine Rolle spielte, schloß die Gewißheit anstrebende epistéme metaphorische Ausdrücke als »undeutlich« und »trügerisch« aus.

Abstract In the years of National Socialism, and even during World War II, German scientists traveled abroad extensively. While international travels by natural scientists were studied in some detail, travels by scholars in the humanities have been studied to a much lesser degree, even though travel documents offer valuable insights into the regulated internationality of National Socialism. – We provide a first overview of international travels of scholars in the humanities between 1933 and 1945. The examples demonstrate how travelling academics dealt with conflicting expectations, justified their intentions, articulated disappointment, offered pragmatic advice for the further shaping of contacts abroad, and in this way became active participants of the resource ensemble of academia and politics. The study is based on extensive material from the political archive of the Auswärtiges Amt and the archive of the Reichsministerium für Wissenschaft, Erziehung und Volksbildung from the Bundesarchiv which to this date have been hardly explored.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the publishing sphere in Germany had toadapt to substantial ideological imperatives. It was subject to the control ofvarious often rivaling institutions of censorship. These censoring institutionsemployed literary scholars to observe and influence the growing production ofbooks and magazines. This paper reconstructs the practices these literary scholarsemployed for dealing with contemporary literature in an ideologically conditio-ned setting. It engages with the still largely unexplored relation between acade-mic socialization, interpretative practices and politically motivated interventions.

Central problems in the disciplines that interpret texts and signs are a consequence of the knowledge that is discovered and used in various ways of dealing with texts and contexts. In order to survey this area of difficulty, the challenge posed by various kinds of relationship between ›texts‹ and contextual ›environments‹ is first discussed, before relations between ›literature‹ and ›knowledge‹ are modelled. In a final step, ›observing‹ ( Beobachten ) is presented as an epistemic practice that is of indispensable significance in the creation of text-context relationships. That is to say: observations are made and presented by authors, characters in texts, and speaking voices, are (re)enacted by recipients in various ways, and are realized on different levels of literary communication, and they produce the fundamental acts of discrimination that make it possible in the first place to form textual worlds and orientate oneself in them. Because observations also play a central role in the construction and use of contexts, they make it possible to reconceptualize the relationship between literature and knowledge with reference to fundamental practices of observing, and that is what is attempted here. A central area of difficulty in literary studies, and one that was much discussed long before the end of the twentieth century, involves the multiplicity of the elements of knowledge that play a role in how »texts« and »contexts« are dealt with and the complex relations between them and those that observe them. Simplifying to make the point, and setting the details aside, these problems – for there are many – can be drawn together in a single question: under what conditions and by what means can we identify and delineate elements of knowledge that are relevant when it comes to drawing productive and plausible connections between texts and (parts) of contexts? This question has consequences that are not to be underestimated – for both the theory and the practice of critically grounded ways of dealing with texts. For one thing, the quantity of (various kinds of) knowledge and epistemic procedures that can be drawn on when dealing with literary texts and their ›environments‹ cannot be underestimated. On the contrary: almost every engagement with textual worlds and their content has something to do with knowledge. Elements of knowledge are taken for granted or acquired, problematized and discussed, but also ignored and dismissed, in every action involving texts and contexts. Clarifications of the underlying concepts of knowledge are therefore just as necessary as internal distinctions. For another, there are no intrinsic limits to the linking of texts and contexts: a text or an element of a text can in principle be linked with anything that might occur to a reader or an interpreter. Given the per se unlimited possibilities for producing text-context relations, there is a need for rules that define the actual text , as it manifests itself in generic terms and with the conditions in which it originated, as a quantity that conditions the construction of contexts – rules that in the process guide, above all, the operations of observing and apportioning (hierarchized) elements of the textual and non-textual ›environments‹ of a text. Last but not least, it remains to be explained why enquiries into the links between literature and knowledge are made at all – we often know nothing at all about what to do with all the knowledge that accrues in various ways of handling texts. After a brief discussion of the clusters of problems outlined above, the thesis is advanced here that a state of sustained alertness to the epistemic dimensions of texts and contexts can help to grasp the acts of observation that are specific to literature and literary communication – which should make it possible to draw up, alongside a more precise concept of knowledge, formulas that can be put into practice for observing observations. To achieve the necessary succinctness and concision in surveying the (rather complex) area of difficulty that has thus been outlined, the following discussion is presented in three sections. In a first step, I would like to explain briefly why the relationships between ›texts‹ and their contextual ›environments‹ present the disciplines that interpret texts and signs with a challenge. In a second step, I model the complex relationships between ›literature‹ and ›knowledge‹ as forms of relation between text and context, and in the process consider various solutions that have been put forward in the context of epistemology and literary theory. In a third and final step, I would like to present ›observing‹ as an epistemic practice that is of indispensable significance in the creation of text-context relationships. That is to say: observations are made and presented by authors, characters in texts, and speaking voices, are (re)enacted by recipients in various ways, and are realized on different levels of literary communication, and they produce the fundamental acts of discrimination that make it possible in the first place to form textual worlds and orientate oneself in them and, likewise, in their contexts. Precisely because observations also and primarily play a central role in the construction and use of contexts when texts are handled by specialists, they make it possible to reconceptualize the relationship between literature and knowledge, and the relations between ›texts‹ and ›contexts‹, with reference to fundamental practices of observing, and that is what is attempted here.

Der Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs traf den neunzehnjährigen Gymnasiasten Ernst Jünger bei den Vorbereitungen auf die Reifeprüfung und befreite den notorisch schlechten Schüler von der bedrängenden Sorge, wie diese zu bewältigen sei. Die Verkündigung der Mobilmachung am 1. August 1914 erlebte er unter der keineswegs begeisterten dörflichen Bevölkerung von Rehburg (siehe den Rückblick von 1934: SW 1, 541–545). Am folgenden Tag fuhr Jünger nach Hannover, um sich als Kriegsfreiwilliger zu melden, doch war der Andrang so groß, dass es noch zwei Tage dauerte, bevor Jünger sich beim Füsilier-Regiment Nr. 73 einschreiben lassen konnte. Nach einer »milden« (ebd., 543) Prüfung wurde ihm am 21. August das Reifezeugnis ausgehändigt. Für den Fall, dass sich die Einberufung verzögern sollte, ließ Jünger sich an der Universität Heidelberg, an der sein Vater in den Jahren um Jüngers Geburt (1895) Assistent am chemischen Institut gewesen war, für das Studium der Botanik einschreiben, doch wurde er für den 6.

Grundlegend für Positionen eines sogenannten ästhetischen Nominalismus ist die radikale Skepsis gegenüber einer realistischen Deutung von Gattungsbegriffen: Gegen Auffassungen, die Gattungen eine apriorische Existenz neben konkreten Individuen zuweisen, bestimmen nominalistische Theorien literarische Gattungen als ›Sprachfiktionen‹. Begründet wird dies zumeist im Rekurs auf die inkommensurable Individualität der ästhetischen Artefakte. Ihre wirkungsmächtige Formulierung findet diese Position nicht erst, doch in entscheidender Weise im Werk des italienischen Philosophen und Kunsttheoretikers Benedetto Croce (1866–1952).

Fallstudien spielen in der Wissenschaftsforschung eine wichtige, wenn auch nicht unproblematische Rolle: Sie sollen wissenschaftstheoretische Aussagen durch die Rekonstruktion exemplarischer wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher Episoden illustrieren, präzisieren und Theorien wissenschaftlicher Rationalität bestätigen oder aber erschüttern. So auch in der Erforschung interdisziplinärer Wissenschaftsbeziehungen: Mit der Auszeichnung historischer Beispiele für das zwischen den Polen ›Konkurrenz‹ und ›Kooperation‹ angesiedelte Spektrum möglicher Relationen zwischen Fächern und Disziplinen bilden Fallstudien ein Instrument, um wissenschaftstheoretische Konzeptionen von Disziplinendifferenzierung und -integration anhand von Wissenschaftsgeschichte konkretisieren, veranschaulichen und im besten Fall bewerten zu können. Ihre Besonderheit (im Vergleich zu Fallstudien innerhalb der intradisziplinären Wissenschaftsforschung) besteht darin, disziplinübergreifende Wissenschaftskonstellationen in den Blick zu nehmen, um Formen des Theorien- und Methodentransfers zwischen Wissenschaftskulturen, Disziplinen und Fächern anhand einer ausgewählten historischen Episode zu rekonstruieren und diese auf theoretische Überlegungen zu Differenzierung und Integration des Wissenschaftssystems zu beziehen.
